Investigation:

We started our investigation by extracting the screengrabs from the viral video and then ran a Google reverse image search on the keyframes.

During the reverse image search we found a video uploaded on the YouTube channel of IndiaTV.

The video was titled: Exclusive CCTV Footage: Mumbai Local Train Crashes into Platform at Churchgate Station | India Tv

The video was uploaded nine years ago.

We also found a news report on the YouTube channel of NDTV.

The description mentioned: An empty Churchgate-bound local train came crashing into the platform after the motorman, who was driving the locomotive, apparently lost control of the vehicle as he couldn’t apply the brakes on time. This caused the overhead wire to snap as the train had exceeded the track limit.

We also found several news reports about the same.

According to a news report on The Indian Express uploaded on June 29, 2015, ‘IT stopped just ten metres short of a coffee stall, as a train’s rake came crashing into the platform at a speed of 30 kmph while entering Churchgate railway station. With the train overshooting its course, and the overhead wires snapping immediately as a result of serious friction, officials suspect the motorman failed to apply brakes on time.’

The video was also uploaded on its YouTube channel.

Other media organizations too carried the news report about the accident that occurred nine years ago.

Conclusion: Old video of a local train crashing at Churchgate station in Mumbai is being shared as that of a recent accident. The video is nine years-old, viral claims are misleading.
