Fact check: Video of flooding from China falsely shared as that of Wayanad

Video from June floods in China is being falsely shared as that of video of flooding in Wayanad. Viral claims are false.

The deadly landslides that struck Kerala’s Wayanad district on July 30 resulted in the deaths of over 219 people, with many still missing. Rescue operations are ongoing, and numerous videos from Wayanad are being widely shared on social media platforms. However, one video that allegedly shows a house flooding in Wayanad is actually from China. These viral claims are misleading.

Claim:

X user E_Jeeva shared the video on his profile with misleading claims.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by obtaining the keyframes from the video and running a reverse image search on them to find the source of the video.

We found a video uploaded on reddit.com.

The title mentioned: The speed at which water rises during the flood in Meizhou, China, within 6 hours.

We also found this video on the YouTube channel of Jaka Parker.

Video uploaded on July 8, 2024 was titled: Amazing video of the mid-June flooding in Meizu, Guangdong, China

We found this video uploaded on Instagram.

The video uploaded five weeks ago was titled (translation): Shocking Images of Meizhou Floods: Timelapse shows devastating flooding on June 16. Flooding continues and the death toll has risen to 5.

The date mentioned on the video was 2024-06-16

We also found the video uploaded on vk.com, which is a Russian social media platform.

The video was titled (translation): Flood in Meizhou (Guangdong, China, 06/16/2024).

The date mentioned on the CCTV files clearly mentions, the clip is from June while the Wayanad landslides happened on July 30, this suggests that viral claims are misleading.

We also found a news report that carried the visuals from the video video, the video was embedded in the news report.

Conclusion: Video from June floods in China is being falsely shared as that of video of flooding in Wayanad. Viral claims are false.
