Lighthouse Journalism discovered a video circulating on social media, particularly on X, with claims that it depicted the Bangladesh Army killing Bangladeshi Hindus who were protesting against radical Islamists. Upon investigation, we found this claim to be misleading. The video is actually old and shows an electrocution incident during the Ratha Yatra.
Claim:
X user Baba Banaras shared the viral video with a misleading claim on his profile.
Check the archive version of the post here.
Other users too are sharing the video with the same claim.
Investigation:
We started the investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video.
This led us to a Facebook post made on July 7. The translation said: 6 people were electrocuted and 35 injured during the Rath Yatra of Sanatan religious religion in Bogra. It is known that they were going towards the police line Shiva temple with the chariot. This time the top of the chariot gets stuck with an electric main line.
We also found a news report that had the same keyframes as shown in the viral video.
The news report mentioned that the district administration has formed an inquiry committee into the death due to electrocution during the Ratha Yatra in Bogra.
We also found a video news report about the same on Jamuna TV. This report too had the visuals shown in the viral video.
We also found several news reports about the accident.
And there were video reports too about the same.
Tausif Akbar, a senior fact checker from Bangladesh, verified that the video is not recent but actually shows the electrocution accident that occurred during the Rath Yatra in Bogra (Bogura).
Conclusion: Old video of electrocution during the Rath Yatra in Bogra is now being shared as recent as that of Hindus in Bangladesh being attacked by Bangladesh Army. Viral claim is misleading.
