Lighthouse Journalism came across a video of a girl claimed to be stuck under a rubble, being shared widely on social media platforms. It was claimed that the video is recent from Gaza. During the investigation we found that the video is from Syria and the girl seen in the video is safe. The video shows the girl playing and not her stuck under the rubble. Video was taken by her father.
Claim:
X user Nadeem Ahmed shared the video on his profile with a viral claim.
Other users too are sharing the video with the same claim.
Investigation:
We started the investigation by uploading the video in the InVid tool. We then ran a reverse image search on the screenshots obtained from the tool.
After running reverse image search on several keyframes we found one article in Arabic that carried the screenshot of the girl.
Uploaded two days ago, the article says the girl seen in the video is Syrian and not from Gaza and was filmed while she was playing.
The report said: The alleged original video garnered 1,72,000 likes and 28,000 shares after it was posted on Tik Tok via the father’s account, ‘Al-Ghaith’ which is followed by 15,000 people. The father also posted other photos of the little girl playing and having fun in clean clothes in their home in Syria.
We also found this news report in Arabic on another portal.
We also found a Facebook post on the official handle of Shorouk News.
The father also urged social media users to not share her video.
Conclusion: A video showing a young girl trapped under rubble, claimed to be from Gaza, is actually from Syria. The footage was filmed by her father while she was playing, and she is safe at home. The viral claims are misleading.
