Fact check: Social media post falsely claims to show a wedding of a Sadhu in Mahakumbh

An old, unrelated video from Ujjain’s Shiv Parvati Vivah goes viral as recent with false claims of a Sadhu getting married in Mahakumbh, Prayagraj.

Lighthouse Journalism found a video widely shared on social media platforms. The visuals showcased, what looked like a wedding scene, claimed to be from the ongoing Mahakumbh in Prayagraj. The video claimed to show the wedding of an Aghori Sadhu.

During the investigation, we found that the video was not from Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, but from Ujjain.

Claim:

X user @divyakumaari shared the video with a false claim on the profile.

Other users too are sharing the video with similar claims.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by uploading the reel to the InVid tool and obtained several keyframes for reverse image search.

We found that the video was uploaded 24 weeks ago on August 5, 2024.

The caption suggested that the video was from Ujjain.

The videos were older than the duration of Prayagraj’s Mahakumbh.

Through keyword search, we found that the video was uploaded on YouTube on March 21, 2024, and had 14 million views.

We found reports about the traditional Shiv Parvati wedding that happens every year in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

We also found video reports about the same.

Conclusion: An old, unrelated video from Ujjain’s Shiv Parvati Vivah goes viral as recent with false claims of a Sadhu getting married in Mahakumbh, Prayagraj.
