In Thailand’s Bangkok, at least 18 people have died after a skyscraper crumbled when the earthquake in Myanmar rattled several neighbouring countries. Lighthouse Journalism found a video that is being widely shared on social media platforms. The video showcased a massive tsunami-like wave hitting buildings.
During the investigation, we found that the video was generated using Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Claim:
X user Labhu Ram Garg shared the video on their profile.
Other users are also sharing the video with the same claim.
Investigation:
We started the investigation by uploading the video in the InVid tool and obtaining keyframes.
We ran a reverse image search on the keyframes and found a video uploaded on Instagram.

The video was uploaded on January 8, the caption stated: Volcanic Eruption off the Coast of Italy.
The comments on the video stated that the video shared was AI-generated.
The Instagram handle stat.us.ai had 613K followers and the bio stated that the profile is run by a Visual Effects Artist, Shaping the Future with AI 🌎Making Viral Videos for your Business 📈
We also found the page on Facebook and X.

We also ran the keyframes through the AI image detector and found that the images gave an AI input.

Conclusion: The viral video claimed to be from the recent Bangkok earthquake is AI-generated. The viral claim and the video are fake.
