Lighthouse Journalism came across a video being shared on social media platforms that showed a Samajwadi Party worker being beaten and taken away by police. During the investigation we found that the video is not recent but from 2020.
Claim:
X user ocean jain shared the video and the claim on their profile.
Other users are also sharing the video with similar claims.
Investigation:
The reverse image search did not yield any results and hence, we ran a keyword search on Google as well as YouTube in English and Hindi.
This led us to a video on NYOOOZ UP.
The video was posted on December 10, 2020.
The video was titled: Video: पुलिस की पिटाई के बाद भी SP कार्यकर्ता Yameen Khan लगाता रहा Akhilesh Yadav जिंदाबाद के नारे

The news report mentioned: Samajwadi Party national president and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav was going to Kannauj on Monday to protest against the agricultural laws. However, he was stopped in the capital itself and seeing the uproar increasing, the police took him into custody. As soon as the news of Akhilesh being taken into custody spread, SP workers started protests at various places. During one such demonstration, former minister Mohammad Yameen Khan also became a victim of police brutality.
Conclusion: Old video of police beating an SP leader, Yameen Khan, is being shared as recent. The viral video is from 2020 and is not related to the recent Waqf Bill. The viral claim is misleading.
