Fact check: Old video falsely shared with claims of Muslim mob chanting anti-Hindu slogans

Video from last year of a mob raising anti-Israel chants, falsely shared as that of a mob raising anti-Hindu chants on account of Eid. The viral claim is misleading.

Misleading claim about old video

Lighthouse Journalism found a video being widely shared on social media platforms where it was claimed that on account of Eid, a Muslim mob was chanting anti-Hindu slogans in Ujjain. It was claimed that the Muslim mob was chanting, ‘Hindu tu barbad hoga’ (Hindus will be destroyed). During the investigation, we found that the video is old and the mob in the video is chanting, ‘Israel tu barbad hoga’. The viral claim is misleading.

Claim:

X user Kreately.in shared the video on their profile.

Other users are also sharing the video with a similar claim.

Investigation:

We uploaded the video in the InVid tool and ran a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video.

A reverse image search on the keyframes led us to a news report uploaded on April 12, 2024.

The news report said that, on account of Eid, chants of ‘Israel tu barbad hoga’ (Israel will be destroyed) were raised.

We found the incident video uploaded on the YouTube channel of Punjab Kesari MP.

The report mentions anti-Israel chants in Ujjain.

We also found a video of the incident on the Facebook channel, Swadesh.

We also found the video on the Facebook profile, News18 Madhya Pradesh.

Conclusion: Video from last year of a mob raising anti-Israel chants, falsely shared as that of a mob raising anti-Hindu chants on account of Eid. The viral claim is misleading.
