Fact check: Rahul Gandhi did not hint at strict action against Hindus, viral claim is misleading

Lighthouse Journalism came across a video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi being shared widely on social media platforms. In the video, without naming anyone, Rahul is seen talking about a strong action to be taken once the BJP government goes. The caption suggests that Rahul Gandhi is talking about the strictest action against the Hindus that they wouldn’t have ever thought about.

During the investigation, we found that the viral claim is misleading and Rahul Gandhi was not talking about action against Hindus.

Claim:

FB user RN Sharma shared the viral video along with the claim on his profile.

Other users too are sharing the same video with similar claim.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video.

We found a longer version of the video posted on X by user Manickam Tagore. B in March 2024.

In the video, Gandhi was heard talking about India’s premier investigative agencies,the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

We found a similar video posted on the YouTube channel of the Times of India.

The description said: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi warned the probe agencies, saying that the CBI, ED are working at the behest of the BJP government, and whenever the saffron party voted out, the people who are following their orders will have to face stern action.

The video was posted in March 2024.

We also found a post on X by Rahul Gandhi in March 2024.

We also found a news report about the same published on March 29, 2024, on the indiatv.com.

The report said: राहुल गांधी ने इस वीडियो में कहा-अगर संस्थाएं अपना काम करतीं..अगर सीबीआई और ईडी अपना काम करती तो ये नहीं होता.. इन सबको यह भी सोचना चाहिए कि किसी न किसी दिन बीजेपी की सरकार बदलेगी और फिर ऐसी कार्रवाई होगी कि मैं गारंटी दे रहा हूं कि फिर से ऐसा नहीं होगा।

Translation: Rahul Gandhi said in this video, “If the institutions had done their work, if CBI and ED had done their work, then this would not have happened. All of them should also think that someday the BJP government will change, and then such action will be taken that I guarantee that this will not happen again.”

Conclusion: Rahul Gandhi’s old video in which he is seen talking about CBI and ED misleadingly shared as a guarantee of intense action by him against Hindus once the BJP government goes. The viral claim is misleading.
