A 2018 video of BJP councillor Munish Chaudhary assaulting a policeman in UP goes viral as West Bengal MLA assaulting a policeman. The viral claim is misleading.

Lighthouse Journalism found a video being shared on the social media platforms. It was claimed along with the video shows West Bengal MLA Mansoor Mohammad Dimir beating a policeman. During the investigation we found that the video was old and from Uttar Pradesh.

Claim:

X user Mahaveer Jain shared the video on his profile with the misleading claim.

Other users are also sharing the video with similar claims.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by uploading the video to the InVid tools.

During the reverse image search, we found a news report on the website of Patrika.

The report mentioned: The case of BJP councilor Munish Chaudhary assaulting a police inspector who had come with his female friend to the restaurant Black Pepper on NH-58 Delhi-Dehradun Highway on Friday night is gaining momentum. While on one hand DGP OP Singh has directed ADG Meerut Zone to investigate the license of the councilor’s restaurant, on the other hand, the public representatives of BJP are maintaining silence in this matter.

We found a few more reports related to this incident.

We found the video report on the website of timesofindia.

The report said: Supporters of BJP councillor Munish Chaudhary, who had assaulted a UP sub-inspector, open celebratory firing from their moving SUV in the middle of a busy road in Meerut to celebrate release of Chaudhary whose bail plea was accepted. The BJP councillor’s supporters further used the celebratory video and photographs of his release on social media. BJP councillor Munish Chaudhary was granted bail on November 2. Munish Chaudhary was in judicial custody for assaulting a cop in a restaurant that was caught on CCTV cameras.
