Lighthouse Journalism came across a video of Sanjay Nirupam being widely shared on social media platforms. The video is a compilation of two videos, One video claims to show, Sanjay Nirupam, of Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), after entering Shiv Sena and the other claims to show him before Shiv Sena, where he is seen saying, “It should be written on the forehead of Eknath Shinde’s son, that his father is a traitor.”
During the investigation, we found that the claim was false, and both videos were clipped and used with false claims.
Claim:
X user Surendra Rajput shared the video on his profile with false claim.
Other users are also sharing the video with a similar claim.
Investigation:
We started the investigation by checking both videos one by one. We first checked the video on the left. We ran a reverse image search on the keyframes and also ran a YouTube keyword search. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam was seen talking in Marathi, so we checked the YouTube accounts of Marathi news channels.
We found a video on ABP MAJHA posted six days ago. He was speaking on the Kunal Kamra controversy.
At around 2 min 55 seconds, the viral statement can be heard.
“Satire happens on political people and we tolerate this but you cannot call anyone a traitor, traitor is not just satire,” says Nirupam. He also alleged that it was Sanjay Raut who would have advised Kamra to use ‘traitor’ for deputy CM Eknath Shinde.
We then searched for another video in the compilation, here we could just spot the ANI mic.
We ran a keyword search on YouTube, ‘Sanjay Nirupam ANI’ and came across all the videos posted by the ANI YouTube handle.
We found a similar looking video on YouTube shorts.
We found a video posted on ANI News 10 months ago.
In the beginning of the video, Sanjay Nirupam says, “The woman MP of Shiv Sena (UBT) has said that it should be written on the forehead of Maharashtra CM’s son that my father is a traitor.”
We found a news report where Shiv Sena UBT’s MP Priyanka Chaturvedi had made this statement in the past.
Priyanka Chaturvedi had said, “My father is a traitor should be written on the forehead of Shrikant Shinde, son of Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde.”
Conclusion: Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam did not give a statement on Maharashtra deputy CM being a traitor. Nirupam’s videos have been edited and shared with false claims. The viral claim is false.
