Amid the ongoing protests in Kolkata over the recent brutal rape and murder case at RG Kar Hospital, Lighthouse Journalism found an image that is being widely circulated on social media platforms. In the image a man was seen cutting a cake. It was claimed along with the image that the accused in the Kolkata case Sanjay Roy once celebrated his birthday in the office of ex-principal Sandip Ghosh at RG Kar Medical College. During the investigation we found that the person seen in the picture is not the accused identified in the Kolkata case.

Instagram user the ultimate trolls shared the viral image on his profile.

Investigation:
We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on the viral image.
We found the image on the Instagram account of CALCUTTA NATIONAL MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL RESIDENT DOCTORS ASSOCIATION cnmcrda. The post was uploaded 6 days ago.
The caption said: Today, the Resident Doctors of CNMC stood united as we gheraoed the Superintendent’s office, demanding accountability for corruption within our institution. Prasun Chatterjee, officially posted as a data entry operator at CNMC&H, signed in the attendance register this morning but refused to show up during duty hours when questioned. Despite being employed full-time, Prasun has a known association with Sandip Ghosh and was present at ABHAYA’s crime scene on August 9th.
We demand @CBI investigate Prasun Chatterjee’s whereabouts on August 9th, 2024, and his connections with Sandip Ghosh on grounds of corruption. We will not tolerate the misuse of power and corruption within our institution.
The post clarified that the person in the picture is Prasun Chaterjee.
Upon running a Google keyword search, we found a Times of India article.
The article mentioned: According to police, one such fake forward is a photograph that purportedly shows former RG Kar principal Sanjib Ghosh sitting inside his office and celebrating a “birthday” with main accused Sanjay Roy who is “happily seen cutting a cake.” Cops said that the photograph is not of any civic volunteer or even that of Roy, but the personal data operator of Ghosh.
Conclusion: Viral picture of man cutting cake in the cabin of RG Kar principal Sanjib Ghosh is not the main accused in Kolkata rape and murder Sanjay Roy. The man in the picture is Prasun Chaterjee, a data entry operator. Viral claim is misleading.
