Fact Check: Old protest video from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar goes viral as recent Ludhiana protest

A six-year-old video from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (earlier Aurangabad) of a rally is now being shared as recent from Ludhiana, Punjab. The viral claim is misleading.

On Tuesday, people blocked the Jalandhar bypass in Ludhiana to protest against the vandalism of the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar in Amritsar. Protestors gathered in large numbers on the Jalandhar-Ludhiana national highway.

A video is being widely shared on X (earlier Twitter) claiming that the video shows the protests in Ludhiana. During the investigation, Lighthouse Journalism found that the video is old and from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, earlier Aurangabad.

Claim:

X user Trun Jatav shared the video with a misleading claim.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video.

We found a similar video uploaded on the YouTube channel of Shivaay Dhule six years ago.

The caption stated: Aurangabad mahamorch ( औरंगाबाद महामोर्चा ) JAY BHIM

We found the exact location as seen in the video through the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue seen in the video.

It had flyover on both sides as seen in the viral video.

Conclusion: A six-year-old video from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (earlier Aurangabad) of a rally is now being shared as recent from Ludhiana, Punjab. The viral claim is misleading.
