Fact check: Viral video of woman falling into pothole in Brazil falsely shared as that of Ayodhya

Video from Cascavel, Brazil of a woman falling in a crater that opened on road is being widely shared as that from Ayodhya. Viral claim is false.

Lighthouse Journalism came across a video being widely shared on social media platforms. In the video, a woman is seen casually walking on a street and then falling into a pothole, Some people are seen rushing to her rescue later. It is being claimed along with the video that the incident is from Ayodhya’s Rampath. During the investigation, we found the viral claim to be false. The incident happened in Brazil.

Claim:

X user Ars Lan shared the viral video on his profile.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by uploading the video in the InVid tool and then ran Google reverse image search on the keyframes obtained through the same.

We found a news report in Portuguese.

The report had similar keyframes. It mentioned, “A civil servant was swallowed by a crater that opened after the floor of a sidewalk collapsed in Cascavel, in the interior of Ceara. According to the city hall, Maria Rosilene is already at home and doing well.” The report was published two years ago on June 2, 2022.

We found a similar news report.

The report said, “Security cameras at an establishment in the center of Cascavel (CE) recorded the moment in which a public employee of the city fell into a crater that opened under her feet. The case was registered on Avenida Chanceler Edson Queiroz and the victim of the crater opening was identified as Maria Rosilene, who works as a street cleaner in the city.”

We found one more media website that carried the news report along with the screenshot from the video.

The report mentioned: A 48-year-old woman was “swallowed” by a hole filled with water while walking on a sidewalk in Cascavel, Fortaleza (CE), on Thursday (2). In an interview with G1, Maria Rosilene Almeida de Souza said she did not notice the cones that marked the location.

It also mentioned that the video was released by YouTube channel CATVE.

Conclusion: Video from Cascavel, Brazil of a woman falling in a crater that opened on road is being widely shared as that from Ayodhya. Viral claim is false.
