Fact Check: 2018 Video of Woman Assaulting Policeman Misrepresented with False Communal Claims

Video from 2018 from Ghaziabad shared with misleading claims to be recent from Karnataka. There is no communal angle in the incident.

Lighthouse Journalism found a video being widely shared on social media platforms of a woman beating a policeman. Further in the video a man is also seen beating that same policeman. It was being claimed that the video is from Karnataka, a Congress ruled state where people from a particular community were beating a policeman after he issued a challan. During the investigation we found that claim to be misleading and that the video is from Ghaziabad from 2018.

Claim:

X user @maheshyagyasain shared the viral video with a misleading claim.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by running a reverse image search on the screenshots obtained from the viral video.

During the investigation we found that the video was also widely shared with misleading claims in 2021 too.

We found that Bareilly Police X handle had commented on the video stating that the video was from Ghaziabad.

We found a news report on jagran.com. The report explained why the woman beat up the policeman.

The report stated: In Ghaziabad, a woman beat a policeman posted on PRV with slippers in public. Other policemen present on PRV tried hard to save the fellow policeman, but they could not free him from the hands of the angry woman. It is being told that the policeman posted on PRV had earlier beaten the woman’s son without any reason. Seeing her son being beaten without any reason in public, his mother also reached there. She asked the policeman the reason for beating her son, but he could not tell anything.

Other reports mentioned that the woman’s brother was beaten.

We also found a post by Ghaziabad police on X in 2018.

Conclusion: Video from 2018 from Ghaziabad shared with misleading claims to be recent from Karnataka. There is no communal angle in the incident.
