Fact check: AI-generated image of PM Narendra Modi wearing a watch goes viral

The viral image showing PM Narendra Modi wearing a watch, shared with claims that a worker secretly clicked it, is AI-generated. The viral image is fake.

An image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is circulating widely on social media, accompanied by claims that it was secretly taken by a worker at the Prime Minister’s residence at 3 PM. The post further alleges that the worker revealed the existence of separate rooms designated for luxurious items owned by the PM. During the investigation, Lighthouse Journalism found that the image is AI-generated.

Claim:

X user “AAP” Ka Ram Gupta shared the image with a viral claim on his handle.

Other users too are sharing the image with similar claims.

Investigation:

The blurred background of the image prompted that this is an AI-generated image.

We then ran the image through AI image detectors.

HIVE Moderation suggested that the input is 98.4 per cent AI generated.


Another AI detector, sightengine too suggested that the image was AI-generated.

Other AI-detectors, wasitai and aiimagedetector.org also suggested that the image is AI-generated.

Conclusion: The viral image showing PM Narendra Modi wearing a watch, shared with claims that a worker secretly clicked it, is AI-generated. The viral image is fake.
