Fact check: Old video of Tsunami peddled as recent from Haridwar

Old video from Japan’s Tsunami goes viral claiming to be recent from floods in Haridwar. Viral claim is false.

Amidst heavy rains in Haridwar since last few days, a video is being widely shared claiming it to be recent from the floods in Haridwar. Several vehicles can be seen washed away in the waters. During the investigation however, Lighthouse Journalism found that the video is from Japan’s Tsunami and not recent from Haridwar. Viral claim is false.

Claim:

YouTube channel Jaimaakarniofficial shared the viral video on the channel.

Other users too are sharing the video.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframe obtained from the video.

The reverse image search led us to a video uploaded on the YouTube channel, Purdue Engineering, titled: Tsunami Study Shows Seawalls and Coastal Forests Reduce Damage in Japan

Visuals in this video looked similar to those of the viral YouTube short.

The time stamp on the video showed 3/11/2011, suggesting that the video could have been from 2011.

During the reverse image search, we also found the video uploaded on the YouTube channel TBS NEWS DIG Powered by JNN.

At around 2.20 min the visuals from the viral video claimed to be from Haridwar can be seen in the TBS News video.

The title in Japanese said (translation): [3.11] Tsunami hits coastal area of ​​Miyako City, Iwate [JNN Archive 311 Record of that day]

Conclusion: Old video from Japan’s Tsunami goes viral claiming to be recent from floods in Haridwar. Viral claim is false.
