Fact check: Video from Pakistan falsely shared as that from India’s Madrasa

Video of a minor boy reportedly hung upside down in a Madrasa in Pakistan is being widely shared claiming it to be from India. Viral claims are misleading.

Lighthouse Journalism came across a video on social media platforms which purportedly shows a kid being hung upside down in a school, claimed to be an Indian Madrasa. During the investigation we found the video not to be from India but from Pakistan. Viral claims are misleading.

Claim:

X user Manoj Sharma Lucknow UP shared the viral video on his profile.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by uploading the video in the InVid tool and obtaining keyframes for reverse image search.

We found a screenshot carried along with a news story on the website of Gulf Today.

The report mentioned: A video and photographs of a minor boy in Pakistan, reportedly hung upside down and beaten by his seminary teacher, went viral on social media. The Rawalpindi police, taking notice of the incident, arrested the teacher involved in the gruesome act on Friday. Personnel of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), with the help of intelligence agencies, located the seminary after the video and photo went viral on social media.

The report was uploaded on 28th June 2019 and the report mentioned that the incident occurred in winter last year.

Other media organizations too carried the report on the same incident.

The report said: Police officials stated that a total of 30 children were residing in the Rawalpindi seminary, which they said belonged to a man hailing from Murree, who is also placed on the Fourth Schedule.

We also found a news report on Geo TV.

The report mentioned: Rawalpindi’s Qari Noor Muhammad who tied a student upside down and assaulted him was sent on a 14-day judicial remand.
