Lighthouse Journalism found a video being circulated on social media platforms, where some men were seen beating a boy on the street. It was being claimed that the video was from Ghaziabad and a Muslim boy was brutally attacked on the road while he was returning home with his sister from school. During the investigation we found the viral claim to be misleading. The video is from an incident in Hapur.
Claim:
X user Manoj Yadav shared the viral video with a misleading claim on his profile.
Other users too are sharing the video with similar claims.
Investigation:
We started the investigation by running a reverse image search on the screenshots obtained from the video after the video was uploaded in the InVid tool.
This did not lead us to any credible media reports. Hence, we continued with keyword search on Google as well as X.
This led us to a post by Hapur Police on X.
The video mentioned the video concerns with an incident that happened last month, where a girl had registered a case of sexual assault, rape against a man who is from a different community. It was also mentioned that the man was identified and taken by police into custody. The video shows the family members of the girl beating the boy after they spotted them together on the streets. The incident is not of Ghaziabad.
Hapur police also requested people to not share the video with misleading claim on social media platforms.
