Lighthouse Journalism found a video being widely circulated on social media platforms, it was claimed to be that of Mansarovar Lake on Mount Kailash in India.
During the investigation, we found that the video was that of Mt Douglas Volcano in Alaska.
Claim:
Instagram user, up_say shared the viral video with claim.
Other users too are sharing videos with same claim.
Investigation:
We started the investigation by running a reverse image search through screenshots obtained after uploading the video in the InVid tool.
This took us to a video posted by Facebook profile, Noel Belo Ng Alaska.
The text on the video stated it was one out of 130 volcanoes in Alaska.
A reverse image search led us to another Facebook video, with the caption: Flying over Alaska’s incredible volcanos in my friend Russ Robinson and his wife Kiersa’s helicopter.
This suggested that the video must have been taken by the user.
We found the video on John Derting’s Instagram profile.
The caption stated: Did you know the Top of Mt Douglas Volcano In Alaska has a volcano crater lake with a PH of 1 which would basically be swimming in Acid Thank you @rusrobin for this incredible adventure on your Helicopter ! This whole trip was off the charts jaw dropping and goes to show Alaska is really the Last Frontier of incredible things to explore
We then ran a keyword search, ‘Mt Douglas Volcano In Alaska’. We found similar-looking pictures of the same on social media platforms.
We found similar pictures as shown in visuals on pictures uploaded on Google Maps too.
Conclusion: A viral video of Mount Douglas Volcano in Alaska which has a volcano crater is being widely shared as that of Kailash Mansarovar Lake in India. The viral claim is false.
