Fact check: Viral video of CCTV footage of earthquake not from Delhi, but from Islamabad

Viral CCTV footage claiming to show earthquake in New Delhi is actually from Islamabad, Pakistan. The viral claim is misleading.

North India woke up to strong tremors early on Monday morning. A 4.0-magnitude tremor first hit Delhi-NCR at around 5:30 a.m. and then in Bihar at 8 a.m. The strong tremors caused residents of high-rise buildings in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad to rush out of their homes.

Amidst the news reports and several posts on social media platforms, a video, which looks like CCTV footage taken from a home is being widely shared on social media platforms. During the investigation, we found that the video was not from New Delhi but from Pakistan. According to reports, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake was felt in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Saturday.

Claim:

X user Anu Sharma shared the viral video with hashtags, Delhi and earthquake in the caption.

Other users too are sharing the video with the same claim.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by checking the profile from where the video was taken from by certain X profiles.

The video was first shared by Muhammad Abdullah Hashmi.

The hashtag used along with the video was, Islamabad.

The video was also shared by Rasala.pk on their X handle.

Further, we checked the date shown on the keyframes obtained from the video, the date was 15th February, 2025 time mentioned was 22:48:15.

The earthquake in Islamabad occurred on 15th February, 2025 at 11:18 pm, according to the reports.

However, the earthquake in New Delhi occurred early morning on Monday, 17th February.

Conclusion: Viral CCTV footage claiming to show earthquake in New Delhi is actually from Islamabad, Pakistan. The viral claim is misleading.
