Fact check: Digitally altered video of Kamala Harris goes viral

Kamala Harris did not ramble a confusing statement during her speech. Viral video is digitally altered, and has been going around the social media platforms since last year.

Lighthouse Journalism came across a video of vice president of the USA, Kamala Harris being shared on social media platforms. The video is being shared ahead of Harris’ entry in the US Presidential elections. In the video Kamala Harris was heard saying, ‘Today is today. And yesterday was today yesterday. Tomorrow will be today tomorrow. So live today so that future today will past today, as it is tomorrow’. During the investigation we found that the video was digitally altered.

X user Smita Deshmukh posted the video on her profile.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by extracting keyframes from the video and then ran a reverse image search on the same to figure out the original video. We also saw people holding placards in the background that said Reproductive Freedom.

Through a combination of reverse image search and Google keyword search we found a video uploaded on the YouTube channel of New York Post a year ago.

In the video she did not say the viral sentence mentioned in the claim.

We also found Facebook live from the event.

At 57 mins in the video, vice president Kamala Harris was called on stage to deliver the speech. In the live video she did not make the viral statement, “Today is today. And yesterday was today yesterday. Tomorrow will be today tomorrow. So live today so that future today will past today, as it is tomorrow.”

The speech was uploaded on the Facebook page of Reproductive Freedom for All.

We also found the transcript of the speech delivered by Kamala Harris.

We could not find the viral statement here either.

We also found a news report by Reuters and AP from 2023 stating the viral video is digitally altered. The edited video has been circulated since last year.
