Fact check: Picture of a bridge from Qatar falsely peddled as that from Prayagraj

Viral image of the bridge claimed to be from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh is actually from Doha Qatar. The viral claim is misleading.

Lighthouse Journalism came across a picture being widely shared on social media platforms, A picture of a bridge was seen shared in the post. It was claimed along with the picture that since Allahabad was renamed to Payagraj, the Faizabad Allahabad road has developed as shown in the picture. During the investigation, we found that the picture is not from Uttar Pradesh but from Qatar.

Claim:

X user Kabeer Thapar shared the picture with the misleading claim.

Other users too are sharing the same image.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by running a reverse image search on the image.

We found the image posted on Facebook page, ‘Highway Engineering Discoveries’.

The image was captioned, ‘Qatar’. We found the image on freepik.com

The picture was captioned: The Landscape of Doha areal view of the West Bay City skyline in the evening Qatar Middle East

The picture of this arch was also available on the stock images website, istockphoto.com

The picture was captioned: Doha, Qatar – May 26, 2021: Al Wahda Bridge in doha city, known as 56 Bridge of Arch.

We found the image of Al Wahda Ach (Arch of Qatar) on Google Maps too.

Conclusion: Viral image of the bridge claimed to be from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh is actually from Doha Qatar. The viral claim is misleading.
