Fact check: Video of man confessing to stealing electricity is not from India, but Pakistan

Old video from a fight over electricity theft from 2020 is from Pakistan and not India. Viral claims are misleading.

Lighthouse Journalism came across a video where a man was seen opposing electricity department officials. It was claimed that the incident is from India. The video was being shared giving it a communal angle. During the investigation we found that the video is from Pakistan and not India.

Claim:

X user jitendra pratap singh shared the video on his profile along with viral claim.

Other users too are sharing the video with the same claim.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video.

We found the video uploaded on Gulistan-e-Johar, Karachi. The video was uploaded on 30 June, 2021, suggesting that the video is old.

We also found the video uploaded on X in 2020 on the social media handle of Trends Pakistan.

We also found the video on several other platforms suggesting that the video is from Karachi, Pakistan.

Conclusion: Old video from a fight over electricity theft from 2020 is from Pakistan and not India. Viral claims are misleading.
